Which line should you join? A queue guide
General free darshan
Entry is free. Reported waits are about 45 to 90 minutes on ordinary weekdays, 2 to 4 hours on Mondays and holidays, and up to 4 to 5 hours during Shravan. Choose this line if you have time, are travelling on a weekday, and would rather not spend money on a pass. The quietest windows reported are roughly 5:30 to 7:00 AM and 10:30 to 11:00 PM. Mondays, Shravan, Mahashivratri and Nag Panchami are the busy ones.
Sheeghra Darshan (fast-track), Rs 250 per person
Two sources agree on Rs 250 per person for the fast-track pass. Choose it if you are visiting on a Monday, a holiday or in Shravan, when the free line can run to several hours, or if you are on a tight same-day schedule. Confirm the price and where to buy it on the day, since we could not check it officially.
Priority queue
One source says senior citizens (70 and above) and differently-abled visitors get priority queues. It is a single source, so ask at the entrance.
Bhasma aarti
This is a separate, pre-booked experience rather than a queue you can join on arrival. The aarti runs at about 4:00 to 6:00 AM, with a reporting time of around 2:30 AM cited, and advance registration or a pass is needed. As reported, phones are banned, men are asked to wear a dhoti and women a saree. A separate booking guide is coming, so we are not walking through the steps here.

Sources disagree on aarti times by 30 to 45 minutes. Timings also shift on festivals and during sawari processions.
Rules that affect your queue
- Dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered, for general darshan. Dhoti or saree is reported for the garbhagriha and Bhasma aarti.
- Phones, cameras, smartwatches, electronics, leather items such as belts and wallets, tobacco and sharp objects are not allowed inside. Deposit them at lockers. Large bags are restricted.
- Lockers: sources conflict on location (Gate 1, or near the Triveni Sangam and Pinaki gates), on cost (free, or Rs 10-20 small and Rs 30-50 large) and on hours (about 4 AM to 11:30 PM). Verify on arrival.
- Security uses an X-ray and metal detector, and reportedly takes 10 to 45 minutes at peak.
- Photography is banned in the sanctum and temple. It is reportedly allowed in the outdoor Mahakal Lok areas, though one source says it is banned across the whole complex.
How to reach Mahakaleshwar from Indore
- Distance: sources give about 55 km (Yatra) to 86 km (Rome2rio, likely a different route). Plan on roughly 55 to 60 km by road and verify.
- Cab: about 90 minutes from the airport.
- Bus: about 1 hour 50 minutes.
- Train: the Indore-Ujjain Passenger (59307/59308) takes about 2 hours.
- Nearest station: Ujjain Junction (UJN), about 2 km from the temple.
