General darshan at Kal Bhairav on the Shipra bank in Bhairavgarh, north Ujjain, is free, and two sources also mention a Rs 500 fast-track option. Before you plan around Kal Bhairav temple Ujjain timings, it helps to know the rules, because the dress code and the offering arrangements matter alongside the opening hour. Sources disagree on several details, so this guide gives ranges and names who said what. Please treat every number here as something to confirm on the day.
Rules to know before you go
- Dress: simhastha.org.in says men should wear full-length clothing (no shorts) and women should cover shoulders and chest, and that sleeveless or revealing clothes may be refused. ujjaindarshan.com is a little softer and recommends shoulders and knees covered.
- Photography: simhastha.org.in says it is banned in the sanctum. ujjaindarshan.com says only that it is "generally restricted". Keep the phone away near the sanctum.
- Entry: general darshan is free (simhastha.org.in, ujjaindarshan.com). Both also mention a Rs 500 VIP or fast-entry option through an authorised counter outside. A ticket-reseller site advertises the same thing, so buy only from a counter you can see is official.
- Aarti: darshan pauses during aarti (simhastha.org.in). The pause times differ by source (see the table).
- Inside the temple: simhastha.org.in says drinking is prohibited on the premises.
- Feeding temple dogs is considered auspicious, according to simhastha.org.in.
Kal Bhairav temple Ujjain timings: what each source says
We could not reach an official temple or committee page, and ujjain.nic.in gives only a short description without hours. The figures below come from secondary sites. Roughly, the temple is open from about 5 to 6:30 AM until about 9:30 to 10 PM.

The two aarti sets do not overlap in the evening at all, so do not plan a tight schedule around either one. If you want to see the aarti, ask at the gate what time it is that day. simhastha.org.in also claims 20,000-25,000 visitors a day and 50,000-80,000 on weekends. That is a single source, so treat it with caution.
The offering, and what changed in April 2025
Reports on this topic differ, so we have attributed each statement to its source.
The tradition
Kal Bhairav is regarded as the kotwal, the guardian of Ujjain, according to srimandir and ujjaindarshan.com. ujjaindarshan.com and srimandir also describe the custom of offering liquor to the deity, with the priest pouring it into a saucer held to the idol's mouth. Both say the offering is not mandatory, and that flowers, coconut and sweets are alternatives.
What changed
- All India Radio reported that Madhya Pradesh banned liquor sale in Ujjain and other religious towns (19 cities and areas) from 1 April 2025.
- In January 2025, The Sootr reported Chief Minister Mohan Yadav as saying the ban would not apply to the temple and that a counter near it would sell liquor for prasad.
- On 1 April 2025, Aaj Tak reported that the two counters outside the temple had closed. It quoted the collector as saying devotees can still offer liquor, but there would be no counter and no sales, and individual devotees may bring one quarter bottle each. Aaj Tak also reported that the temple committee manages prasad arrangements.
- Amar Ujala (3 April 2025) reported that devotees must buy liquor outside municipal limits and bring it, that shopkeepers around the temple signed affidavits not to sell, and that police check entry routes.
What we could not settle
Several aggregator pages, including ujjaindarshan.com and simhastha.org.in, still describe authorised counters outside the gate. Our reading is that these pages may predate the April 2025 change, given the news reports above. We found no 2026 source confirming the current arrangement either way. We are not giving a price and are not promising any counter near the temple. If you wish to make the offering, confirm the rules on the spot with temple staff or the administration. If you would rather not, the sources describe a flower, coconut or sweet offering as an alternative.
Legend and Bhairav Ashtami
According to ujjain.nic.in, the temple is believed to have been built by King Bhadresen, the Skanda Purana's Avanti Khanda mentions it, and it is linked with the Kapalika and Aghora sects. srimandir and ujjaindarshan.com say devotees visit for the kotwal's permission before completing the pilgrimage of Ujjain. srimandir calls the temple about 6,000 years old, which is a devotional claim rather than a dated fact. Bhairav Ashtami falls on Krishna paksha Ashtami of Margashirsha, believed to be the day Kal Bhairav appeared (per Wikipedia). Check the date each year.
How to reach and distances
The temple is on the Shipra (Kshipra) river bank at Bhairavgarh, north Ujjain (ujjain.nic.in). Sources give conflicting distances, so check Maps:
- From Ujjain Junction: about 3 km (simhastha.org.in) or 7 km (srimandir).
- From Mahakaleshwar: about 2 km (simhastha.org.in) or about 5 km (ujjaindarshan.com).
- Auto from the station: Rs 50-100, from one source only (simhastha.org.in). Agree the fare before you sit.
- From Indore: about 53 km to Ujjain (ujjain.nic.in). The airport figure conflicts, 53 km per ujjain.nic.in and 70 km per srimandir.
What we could not confirm
- An official temple or committee page with hours and rules.
- The current liquor-offering arrangement.
- Any bag or locker rules. We found none.
- City bus routes and fares to the temple, and the bus stand distance.
