Best Places to Visit in Indore: Plan by Time, Timings and Costs (2026)

Indore Junction is only about 1 km from the city centre, and Rajwada is close by, so the seven-storey Holkar palace is near the station (the station distance rests on a single source, so check it on the map). Here is how we would plan the best places to visit in Indore: heritage, temples and food first, with the waterfalls and day trips on a separate day. The city was named India's cleanest for the eighth consecutive year in the 2024-25 Swachh Survekshan, which is the latest result we could confirm; a newer result may exist.

Last verified: 2026-09-26. Prices, timings and distances change and several sources disagree, so treat every figure below as a starting point and confirm on the day.

Getting in and when to come

• By air: Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport is at Bijasen Tekri, about 8 km west/south-west of the centre.
• By rail: Indore Junction (code INDB, Western Railway) is about 1 km from the centre.
• Season: October to February is the peak season, April-May runs about 39-42 C, and the July-September monsoon is when the waterfalls are at their fullest. More in our Indore weather and best time to visit guide.

Plan by time available (our suggestions)

The plans below are our own suggestions, not sourced facts. The only sourced constraint that shapes them: Rajwada, Lal Bagh Palace and the Central Museum are all listed as closed on Mondays, so on a Monday swap in temples and the food streets.

Half a day

Start at Rajwada, walk to Gandhi Hall, then finish with dinner at Sarafa Bazaar once the food stalls open in the evening.

One day

Morning at Khajrana Ganesh (see the timing note below, since darshan pauses at midday), then Rajwada and Lal Bagh Palace or the Central Museum in the daytime window, and end at Sarafa Bazaar or 56 Dukan.

Two days

Heritage

• Rajwada: a seven-storey Holkar palace begun in 1747 (Wikipedia gives construction as 1747-1766), with a garden and an Ahilya Bai statue in front. Aggregators list 10:00-17:00, closed Monday, Rs 10 for Indians and Rs 250 for foreigners. There is no official fee page we could find, so verify on the day.
• Lal Bagh Palace: 45 rooms, per MP Tourism. MP Tourism lists 10:00-17:00, closed Monday and public holidays, Rs 20 for Indians and Rs 400 for foreigners, and no photography inside.
• Central Museum: holds an inscription dated 710 AD (the Nannap inscription). It is near the GPO on Agra-Mumbai Road. Timings are 10:00-17:00, closed Monday and public holidays. The foreigner fee is source-dependent (Rs 200 on one listing, Rs 400 on MP Tourism), with Rs 20 for Indians.
• Gandhi Hall: an Indo-Gothic hall built in 1904 as King Edward Hall and renamed in 1948; entry is listed as free.
• Krishnapura Chhatris: three Holkar cenotaphs, for Krishna Bai, Tukoji Rao II and Shivaji Rao.

Temples

• Khajrana Ganesh: built in 1735 by Ahilyabai Holkar according to the sources we used, with a legend that the idol was retrieved from a well. Darshan is listed as 05:00-12:00 and 16:00-21:00, so it is closed midday. Aarti times conflict between sources, so check on the day.
• Pitra Parvat: a 72-ft eight-metal Hanuman statue, about 11-12 km from the centre. Free entry, darshan 06:00-22:00. Evening light-show times differ by source.
• Kanch Mandir: a Jain glass temple built in 1903 by Seth Hukumchand Jain; no photography inside.
• Annapurna Temple: rebuilt in 1959, on about 2 acres, with a 14 ft Kashi Vishwanath statue.
• Bada Ganpati: at the west end of MG Road, about 3 km from the Junction. One source (Free Press Journal) gives the idol as 25 ft x 14 ft.
• Bijasan Mata: a hilltop shrine with no entry fee, and it stays open late during Navratri.

Food

• Sarafa Bazaar: a jewellery market by day that becomes a food street after the jewellers close, with stalls starting after about 20:00. Closing times range from about 01:30 to 03:00 depending on the source. No entry fee. One named stop: Joshi Dahi Bada House, listed at 24, Bada Sarafa, Sarafa Bazar, Indore 452002 (single-source listing, so verify before you go).
• 56 Dukan (also spelled Chappan Dukan): about 56 food shops along roughly 200 m of Mahatma Gandhi Road near New Palasia, established in 1974. Our post lists the busiest hours as 4-8 PM.

Nature, parks and waterfalls

• Ralamandal Wildlife Sanctuary: established in 1989, with a shikargah built in 1905 by Shivaji Rao Holkar. Timings are mostly given as 09:00-18:30, and fees range from Rs 5 to Rs 60 depending on the source.
• Sirpur Lake: a Ramsar wetland listed on 7 January 2022, and a winter birdwatching spot.
• Pipliyapala Regional Park: a 42-acre lake inside an 80-acre park, about 6 km from the station.
• Indore Zoo (Kamla Nehru Prani Sangrahalaya): established in 1974 and closed on Mondays; ticket prices differ between sources. There is also a Kamla Nehru Park guide.
• Patalpani: a drop of about 300 ft, roughly 35 km out, best in the July-September monsoon.
• Tincha Falls: about 25-30 km out depending on the source. Entry is free, cars are listed at Rs 20, and swimming is not allowed.
• Bamniya Kund: about a 300 ft drop, reached by a 7-8 km trek beyond Nakheri Dam. Distances from the city conflict (40-55 km), and September to December is listed as the best window.

Day trips

• Mandu: Jahaz Mahal is listed at Rs 5 for Indians.
• Maheshwar: about 90 km, roughly 2 hours via Dhamnod. The Rehwa Society originally began with 8 Meru women, per Wikipedia.
• Omkareshwar: a taxi from Indore is quoted at Rs 1,500-2,600 one way, and a shared boat at Rs 50.
• Dhar: the fort was built in 1344, in red sandstone, according to the Dhar district site.
• Bagh Caves: nine caves, of which five survive. The paintings were removed in 1982 to Gujari Mahal in Gwalior.
• Janapav Kuti: sources disagree on its height, 854 m on Wikipedia against 881 m on Trawell.
